Jean de Brunhoff (1899–1937) was a French writer and illustrator best known for creating the beloved children’s book character Babar the Elephant. His first book, Histoire de Babar, was published in 1931 and became an international success. De Brunhoff’s gentle storytelling and distinctive watercolor illustrations helped define early 20th-century picture books.
